September’s A Long Way Away

…and a very, very long time to wait for a new episode of Modern Family. Even though it’s only been two days since the finale, we don’t blame you if you’re in MF-withdrawal. Since September’s a long time to wait, hopefully this video of Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Mitchell”) covering Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” will be able to give you a quick fix:

Glee Goes GaGa

While every other show is busy wrapping up its season (or series), Glee still has a few songs to belt out before school’s out for the summer. Of those remaining, next week’s Lady Gaga-themed episode, “Theatricality,” is probably the most hotly anticipated. Revolving around introverted Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), the storyline will focus on self-expression, and culminates in Tina becoming a goth. Yeah. Keep in mind, this is the same show that recently named guest star Jonathan Groff’s character “Jesse” pretty much solely so it could use the song “Jessie’s Girl.” We never said we watched this show for the plot…

Regardless of the questionable storyline, we can’t lie about our excitement to watch “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” as performed by McKinley High’s finest. You can download those songs from next week (and others from the rest of the season) for free here. I think it’s safe to say that as long as the show keeps up the quality of its musical numbers, Glee’s got a halo around its finger around me.

Things That Could Have Been Cool (I Guess), But Aren’t: The Lady Gaga Comic Book

via Bluewater Productions

Bluewater Productions has decided to make some “culturally relevant” comic books based on the lives of some of the biggest celebrities. So they made one about Lady Gaga. But from the early released photos of the comic book, it doesn’t look all that exciting. Other celebs to get the comic book treatment? Robert Pattinson, David Beckham, 50 Cent. Nothing could sound more interesting.

Excuse my sarcasm, it’s an overcast Monday here in LA. And you know we Angelenos don’t fare well without our sunshine.

We Only Report the News…

Like The New Yorker, NPR is one of those things that you tell people you like in order to impress them and make them think you’re smarter than you really are. While I do occasionally listen to NPR, it’s typically because I accidentally hit the wrong buttons when trying to flip between KIIS FM and AMP Radio. On top of that, I’m not going to lie to you…I only have it programmed in my car so that anyone else who rides in it will think I have more brain cells than the minimum needed to analyze the lyrics of “Ridin’ Solo” (no offense to Jason Derulo- it’s really catchy!). The main reason I have a hard time listening to NPR? It’s not the stories (which are fairly interesting), but the way they are delivered. Dull and montone – they are almost enough to put me to sleep…on a Thursday afternoon…on the 405.

So, when I first watched this video put together by NPR’s team, I was shocked. Sure, the dancing is off, and the movement is horribly, horribly uncomfortable and awkward – but it made me want to tune in and give the station a second chance. Maybe they should start playing GaGa in between stories about the secret ways to order a Big Mac and the undoubtedly-crazy history of Yoga.

Lil’ Gaga

You’ve probably seen this video, but if you haven’t it’s worth checking out. Whether you love or hate Lady GaGa – this Justin Bieber-lookalike’s performance of “Paparazzi” is incredible. You’ll be able to see it again live tomorrow on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he’ll be performing it for the host (and Lady GaGa fan).

ASOS: Quite Possibly the Best Webstore…Ever

Cavallari's cover. via TheLipstickDiaries

Online clothing store ASOS was officially launched in the year 2000, but I only discovered the site until late last year. While many have proclaimed the past decade as one of “zero” or nothingness, I can safely say that this one discovery at the eleventh-hour of 2009, made that decade as a whole worthwhile for me. While it began as a clothing store, ASOS has transformed over the years, and now produces its own clothing, publishes its own magazine, and has become a lifestyle brand in its own right.

But, be careful with ASOS. On a recent night, a casual visit resulted in a massive emptying of my wallet, the loss of hours of productivity, and a strange (but temporary) yearning to be British. The reasons why this site is so amazing are many – an insane amount of variety, shockingly low prices, fashion-forward choices, and probably the most easily navigable shopping site I’ve ever seen. What other internet portal lets you search by size, style, color, brand, and price range all at once? And then once you’ve found something, let’s you have almost every detail you could ask about the product. Best of all? For us Americans, you can conveniently switch the site from pricing in pounds to American dollars. Genius! Unless you don’t really want to know how much you’re spending…which I often find I don’t…

I’d love to keep ASOS my little secret, but it’s only a matter of time until it’s everywhere. When it’s this easy to use, this in-style, and this rapidly on the rise, how could it ever stay a secret forever?

Wheel of Misfortune

Have you ever heard the phrase “painfully stupid”? If not, then this video will be the perfect introduction. With soldiers performing like this at home, and reinacting Lady Gaga music videos abroad, it makes me just a tiny bit worried about national security…

Who Knew War Could Be Funny?

When Lady Gaga and Beyonce broke out the music video for “Telephone” in March, we were there to dissect the strange, yet oddly captivating mini-movie. Now, a new video has surfaced with soldiers in Afghanistan reenacting the video…with some hilarious results. Who said politics and pop culture can’t come together in harmony?

The Hills: Drink Away the Pain

In honor of tonight’s premiere of The Hills, join along in a drinking game we’ve come up with to help celebrate the occasion! Remember – the more you drink, the less excruciatingly painful the episode will be to get through!

Since when did Stephanie get to be included in these? via MTV

Take a drink each time…

  • someone mentions “10 surgeries in one day”
  • Audrina is confused about her boy situation
  • Lauren is referenced
  • Kristin flirts with Brody
  • Audrina glances offscreen confused
  • a Black Eyed Peas, Timbaland, or Jason Derulo song is used

Take a shot when…

  • Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” is inevitably used
  • Stacie appears onscreen (why is she on this!?! she’s a “bartender!”)
  • Spencer’s upcoming removal from the show is foreshadowed
  • anyone discusses Kristin’s “drug problem” (I know 6 seasons is long, but this is how low we’ve come in plotlines?)
  • Stephanie eats anything

It’s been a long, strange road to this point…so I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise what a horrible wreck we’re in shape for this season.

GLEEful Possibilities

Hot off the critically acclaimed and highly rated Madonna-themed episode of GLEE, the show’s creators and cast have buzzed about the possibility of future themed episodes. We already know that a Lady Gaga episode is on the way, and that a second Madonna episode will premiere early next year, but what else is in the pipeline?

Will "Me Against the Music" be in "The Power of Madonna 2"? via Flickr

Well, if internet petitioners and twitter users have their way, Britney Spears could be getting her own episode soon as well. We can almost see it now – Sue Sylvester’s rendition of “Toxic,” Kurt’s version of “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman,” or maybe even Rachel’s very own “Piece of Me”? Could one too many slushees in the face cause one of the fierce singers to shave their hair off? Or maybe marry a back up dancer, only to get a reality show devoted to weight loss later on?

PaparazzGLEE via Flickr

Another possibility could be Billy Joel or Courtney Love themed episodes. While I have to admit I don’t know much of Courtney’s repertoire (if one even exists), the idea of a pop train wreck storyline seems too similar to Britney’s blackout-era collection for a completely independent episode. As for Billy Joel? Well, he certainly has a large collection to work from, but with so many New York-centric hits, would they work in a suburban Ohio setting?

Flavors of the week. via Flickr

How about these ideas? A Disney-themed episode – it could totally work with all the growing up plotlines, self-discovery themes, and focus on underdogs. A Broadway-themed episode? Sure, the show has played with musicals – “Defying Gravity” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” being two big examples of that – but what about a full episode of show tunes? And finally, what about episodes devoted to the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis, or others who have made music what it is? Sure, Madonna and Britney are great, but music does go back further than 25 years…even if most of us may have trouble thinking back that far.

The New New Wave

Yesterday, the LA Times published a field guide for the preppie lifestyle in LA. In the article, it officially acknowledged as fact something that I’ve been widely claiming for a while: the 80’s are back. In case you weren’t paying attention, this week’s most downloaded album was a compilation of Madonna songs. La Roux’s “Bulletproof,” a song similar in both sound and style to 80’s synth-pop hits, has just landed at #1 on the UK’s Billboard charts. In September, Gordon Gekko will return to the big screen in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. And this spring’s biggest fashion trend? Boyfriend shirts. Ronald Reagan may be dead, but Jerry Brown’s campaign for governor of California is looking very much alive. The 80’s are definitely back.

The Future will be neon. via Flickr

While icons of the 80’s may have slipped into away into history, their parallels are just as live as ever. Who needs TCBY when Yourtlands across town are packed nearly every night? Why complain that Madonna isn’t on KIIS, when every other song played on the radio is Lady Gaga? And finally, why mourn the fact that Michael Jackson’s no longer alive, when he’s about to become the next king of the Vegas strip? Sure, the 80’s will never be duplicated, but they are certainly being replicated in almost every facet of today’s pop culture landscape. The launch of the Macintosh? Only eclipsed in height by the launch of the iPad and iPhone 4G. Spring’s fashion trends? Boyfriend shirts and lycra.

From Macintosh to iPad. via Flickr

Of course, if you’re looking for the real thing, relics of the 80’s still exist all over town. Both Mr. Chow and Spago in Beverly Hills can make you feel like you’re dining in the era of Reagan, and drinking at bars in the Beverly Hills Hotel or Beverly Hilton will make you feel like you’re in the middle of Bret Easton Ellis’ 80’s masterpiece Less Than Zero (which, by the way, has a sequel coming out this summer). True, many 80’s icons are gone fovever, but their influence is arguably stronger today than it was at any other point in the past 20 years. After all, at what other point in that span of time would you have been able to tell someone Molly Ringwald would be on stage at the Oscars and not gotten laughed at in response?

Ke$ha is a Fraud

While “Tik Tok” may be a catchy song (to the point of extreme annoyance), Ke$ha is slowly being revealed to be a bigger and bigger fraud with each day that passes. At first I thought she was merely a bad Lady Gaga clone, but as time has passed, it’s increasingly clear that she has no creativity and is desperate for any attention she can get. If you don’t believe me, check out her performance on this weekend’s SNL (which she ripped off from an Australian singer), and her depressingly desperate-for-attention appearance on The Simple Life. The SNL performance proves she can’t sing, the Simple Life appearance proves she can’t act, and the $ proves she can’t spell.

Googling the Meaning of Life

Apparently, all of life’s answers can be answered by Google. And many of life’s mysteries can as well. And, if you have time after those searches, you can also learn about stereotypes, weird sexual things, and everything else the internet is the expert of.

Let’s take google for a test ride and see what some people have been looking up. Using autofill it’s clear America is interested in…

-Animal defecation and noises

Is that a Lady Gaga song buried in there?

– Canadian slavery

Who knew about slavery in the North?

-itself being fat, ignorant, and drunk

Why, why do they act like "that"!?

-poop, the sky, and the historical factors that have left Haiti one of the most desolate places on the planet

The colors were for Breast Cancer awareness, duh!

I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself today. More to come!

Before She Was the Lady

While we don’t think she was ever a man like some rumors accuse, Lady Gaga certainly looked quite different before she started wearing planets as dresses and muppets as sweaters. In fact, she looks a little bit like someone on Jersey Shore…

The Long and Winding Road…to Vegas

So, how do you make a perfect playlist for a vacation? Well, for an upcoming trip to Vegas, we decided to use Google Maps as our guide to break the trip into some themed blocks. Here are some of the highlights:

Leaving LA – “Leaving Port” by James Horner, Titanic Soundtrack

Desert Passage – “Country Roads” John Denver, “Life is a Highway” Tom Cochrane, “California” Phantom Planet

Pre-Barstow Power (ballad) hour- “I’ll Remember” Madonna, “Power of Love” Celine Dion, “How Will I Know” Whitney Houston

Post-Barstow Karaoke KarRide – “Don’t Stop Believin'” Glee Soundtrack, “Mamma Mia” Mamma Mia – the Movie Soundtrack, “Under the Sea” The Little Mermaid

Entering Nevada – “Bad Romance” Lady Gaga, “3” Britney Spears, “Ridin’ Solo” Jason Derulo

Driving Down the Strip – “I Gotta Feeling” Black Eyed Peas, “Right Round” Flo Rida

And then, to get in the mood for the impending bad decisions and epic after-the-fact stories, a viewing of Britney Spear’s 2007 VMA “performance” of Gimme More is the only thing that seems appropriate enough.
