For those of us in Southern California, the Kentucky Derby may feel like thousands of miles away…because it is. But, for one day tomorrow, Louisville gets its 15 minutes (or more like 2 minutes) of fame a year, when it hosts the 136th race around Churchill Downs. While there really is no way to celebrate that can compare to getting down-and-dirty with rednecks and rowdy college students in the infield, you can still celebrate with some horseplay at the beach tomorrow. From 11:00AM to 5:00PM, Coast restaurant at Shutters at the Beach in Santa Monica will be hosting a Kentucky Derby-themed party to honor the occasion. To celebrate properly, suspenders are reccomended for men and large hats for women. Expect to down a couple mint juleps or Lynchburg lemonades before the festivities are over. The southern accents and confederate attitude may not be as genuine as being in Louisville, but it’s as close as you’ll get and still be able to drink within view of the Pacific.
By the end of the day, you’ll be telling people to talk Derby to you…trust us.
