The Oscars: A Quiet Preference

So it turns out that the two movies I was championing for at the Oscars -A SINGLE MAN and A SERIOUS MAN… man- didn’t make a huge dent at the awards ceremony. Which makes me as a viewer feel a bit underrepresented. I loved these movies for their quietness, their simple stories, rich emotions more often spoken through a smile or a nod than through a blast or a scream.

Although there have been years for the quiet movies. NOTES ON A SCANDAL, LITTLE CHILDREN. Films much simpler than the computer-generated graphics of AVATAR and the booming of bombs in HURT LOCKER. Maybe next year the quiet films will make a comeback, tip-toeing as always, making little sound but speaking volumes.
